Happy Monday!
Jim here and we have four kids, the oldest of which will be a teenager soon. Selfishly, this first post was really useful for us as we navigate to the next “level” in money management for our kids.
No more piggy banks [Contessa Capital Advisors] – “I saw a cool parenting idea online recently: A couple had given their kids a lesson in personal finance, by giving each one a turn to plan the annual family summer trip. Starting with the oldest of three, they were given a total amount they could spend and they could plan any trip they wanted, within that budget. The only rules were that there had to be an actual trip planned (ie rather than splurging on a new tv system or whatever), and the plan had to cover everything including transportation, hotels, and food for the whole family.”
The Right Kind of Stubborn [Paul Graham] – “Successful people tend to be persistent. New ideas often don’t work at first, but they’re not deterred. They keep trying and eventually find something that does.”
Please enjoy this short science fiction story about free will by the amazing Ted Chiang. You were always going to read it so you might as well start. 🤣
What’s expected of us [Ted Chiang in Nature] – “By now you’ve probably seen a Predictor; millions of them have been sold by the time you’re reading this. For those who haven’t seen one, it’s a small device, like a remote for opening your car door. Its only features are a button and a big green LED. The light flashes if you press the button. Specifically, the light flashes one second before you press the button.”
